This is a great opportunity to use advocacy, research, management, and communication skills to support renewable and sustainable resources in the forest products industry.
As the Manager of Packaging and Recovered Fiber for American Forest & Paper Association, you will perform the daily management of three industry sectors (containerboard, paperboard, and recovered fiber). In addition to budget, meetings, and administrative management, you will have an important role in legislative advocacy, educational outreach, and the identification of industry needs and solutions.
As part of a team, you will also assist with defeating or amending state and local legislative and regulatory initiatives that are potentially harmful to the industry, and educate state legislators, regulators, local level officials and regional government policymakers about the voluntary recovery efforts of the industry and any policies that will negatively affect the industry.
This position will work from our Washington DC office and will report to two supervisors: Executive Director for Packaging; and Executive Director for Recovered Fiber and Paperboard.
Essential Job Functions:
Paper and Packaging Recovery
Stay current on issues and developments in the recycling industry and marketplace and understand how they relate to state legislative and regulatory action
Interface with members of the Recovered Fiber Sector, other recycling industry trade associations and ENGOs, as needed
Identify issues and assist the Executive Director, Recovered Fiber and the Director, Packaging in determining desired outcomes to advance the Sectors’ objectives
Develop subject matter expertise (data & information) that can support lobbying efforts; participate in policymaker education and lobbying activities as needed
Represent AF&PA to outside audiences, organizations and strategic alliances through various means including public speaking to groups of all sizes
Assist the Sector Executives with research projects, on certain packaging and/or paper recovery and recycling topics. This includes:
Support implementation of research design, approach, and data collection
Assist with analysis of data/information, next steps and communication of results to staff and members
Manage www.paperboardpackaging.org website and PPA email
Perform outreach to university professors and students
Draft agendas, slides, memos and minutes for all meetings
Packaging and Recovered Fiber Sectors
Provide support for day-to-day management of Sectors to include meeting coordination, budget management and administrative duties
Draft agendas, minutes, slides and assist with writing memos for fall and spring Sector meetings and Sector-related working group meetings; manage all meeting logistics
Support membership recruitment and retention efforts for the Sectors
Identify and provide AF&PA resources that respond to specific member needs
Provide information and content ideas and collaborate with Communications staff on creation of interactive, informative and up-to-date recycling-related materials for www.paperrecycles.org print and digital media (with communications and vendors)
Manage the development and execution of Recovered Fiber educational outreach plan to accomplish the industry’s objectives, to include:
Keep members apprised of relevant Recovered Fiber initiatives and activities
Engage other recycling industry associations to advance common educational outreach goals
Serve on the Paper & Packaging Recovery, Fees and Bans Team and other teams as appropriate
Understanding of the paper recycling industry, manufacturing industry and marketplace dynamics
Excellent communication skills in writing, editing and public presentation
Strong organizational and project management skills to effectively balance competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
Strong critical thinking, analytical and research skills
Ability to produce high quality work within tight deadlines
Ability to develop, analyze and evaluate statistical data
Ability to exercise judgment and discretion with initiative, and limited supervision
Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to maintain positive rapport with co-workers
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Marketing or Communications
Five or more years of professional work experience required, preferably in the paper recycling industry, recycling industry association, forest products company or industry supplier
Experience managing a budget
