The Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA), Hennepin County Bar Association (HCBA), and Ramsey County Bar Association (RCBA) recently decided to adopt a new and unique model through shared staff and one Executive Director to better serve the collective needs of the three Associations. MSBA is Minnesota’s oldest bar association, founded in 1883. HCBA is Minnesota's largest district bar association, serving Minneapolis and its surrounding communities, while RCBA serves St. Paul and the nearby area. Members of the 21 district bar associations across Minnesota are members of MSBA and vice-versa. Association membership of approximately 15,000 represents the entire spectrum of the Minnesota legal community, from private practitioners to judges, government and legal services attorneys, and corporate counsel.
The Executive Director is responsible for leading, managing, reorganizing and executing the affairs of the Bar Associations and implementing their policies to the overall benefit of the organizations and their membership. Each of the Bar Associations also has its own charitable Foundation the Executive Director would oversee.
The position will report to the three Bar Association Boards of Directors (along with each Association’s respective Foundation Board) separately, and would manage a staff of approximately 40 employees with an annual total operating budget of approximately $6.5 million, along with the assets of the Bar Associations and budgets of the Foundations.
PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
The Executive Director works in partnership with the Boards of Directors and senior staff to provide leadership, vision, and direction for the Bar Associations. The Executive Director also manages the day-to-day operations of the associations and foundations under policies determined by the respective boards. The primary responsibilities are:
Strategic Leadership and Communication: Assist in the development of, and fully implement the strategic plans of the Bar Associations, clearly articulating organizational goals for financial and programmatic stability and growth; motivate and inspire others to support the vision of the Bar Associations; enthusiastically model the values of the Bar Associations.
Operational Planning and Management: Generate revenue and fundraise for the Bar Association and Foundation; recruit, retain, and ensure fulfillment of members; work with the Boards to draft, monitor, and update policies and procedures; monitor the planning, implementation, and evaluation of member programs; Ensure a smooth, cohesive transition for the shared staff and for the Boards of the Bar Associations; Maximize efficiency and minimize redundancies among the Bar Associations.
Financial Planning and Management: Oversee the development and management of budgetary and financial controls and procedures, including annual audits; ensure proper administration of funds management procedures; oversee fundraising, grant-making, and non-dues revenue generation; keep the Boards informed of financial and operational issues.
Human Resources Planning and Management: Support, develop, and retain a qualified and excellent staff: support the senior management team and ensure that the internal functions are fulfilled; ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the organization by selecting and developing effective people; foster a culture of cooperation and mutual respect, focusing on outstanding performance.
Relationship Management: Maintain strong and effective internal relationships, with the Board and staff; build and maintain strong external relationships with members, volunteers, government leaders, judiciary, funders, community leaders, and partner organizations; effectively involve others and delegate decisions to appropriate levels; ensure commitment to diversity and inclusion.
A Juris Doctorate OR a Master’s degree in a related field, such as business administration or public administration, is preferred.
Demonstrated success in organizational leadership, with proven competence in guiding the development and implementation of a strategic plan, successful institutional positioning, and translating ideas into reality.
Experience in the field of law, public policy, business administration and/or nonprofit management and association management, with experience in bar association management preferred.
Familiarity with the legal community of Greater Minnesota and the Twin Cities or the ability to quickly make connections in the community.
Knowledge of current service trends and emerging models for professional associations.
Proven administrative competence in areas such as financial management, budgeting, marketing, technology, planning, and goal setting.
Experience building, managing, and strengthening teams. Able to develop and lead a high performing team.
Experience and skill recruiting and developing Boards of Directors made up of leading professionals, with an eye toward diversity and inclusion.
A positive orientation to change and new ways of doing business, including the ability to positively manage change and transition.
The ability and commitment to envision and describe the long-term future of the Bar Associations in a way that inspires and motivates key stakeholders.
The ability and commitment to be an engaging ambassador and advocate for the Bar Associations and Bar Foundations with key business, community, and government leaders. This includes the ability to skillfully manage the needs of competing stakeholders.
