The Rees Group, Inc., an association management company located in Madison, Wisconsin, is seeking a dynamic leader Executive Director for the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP). The position is located in Madison, Wisconsin, with an option to telecommute.
The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the College, working closely with Council, the President and Secretary/Treasurer, and operational committee chairs to advance the strategic plan, and manage all policies, programs, services, budgets, and practices. The Executive Director serves as an inspirational staff team leader for staff within The Rees Group, and will be responsible for ensuring the successful completion of all tasks outlined in the management contract. Success will be measured by the continued operational and financial success of ACVP, as well as the ability to strategically lead ACVP through an operational and cultural shift to a stable and successful future.
OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FACING THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Executive Director will capitalize on the College’s successful 69-year history, shepherding the organization through this next phase of evolution. The Executive Director will provide the skilled and vibrant leadership necessary to drive the mission and strategy of the College, grow its programs, and enhance its influence in the field of veterinary pathology. S/he will serve as the main contact for all inquiries from members of the public, press, and other interested parties. This position provides an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to work collaboratively with the College’s leadership to advance veterinary pathology education.
The Executive Director will engage in the following opportunities and challenges in the first 12-18 months of his/her tenure:
Collaborate with the Council to articulate and implement a vision for the future of the College
The Executive Director will work closely with the ACVP Council, President, and Secretary/Treasurer in guiding the College. S/he will actively engage and serve as thought-partner and facilitator to the board in advancing the organization’s mission and strategically aligning resources to most effectively fulfill the mission. Strategic priorities include transition of a high stakes board certifying exam to new exam provider, redesign website and transition to new membership database platform, develop maintenance of certification database, restructure annual meeting to meet changing attendee educational needs, develop educational outreach programs to support life-long learning requirements, and improve communication among Diplomates and the College, as well as to the general public and policy makers. S/he will work transparently with Council and committee members on strategic and operational priorities, initiatives, and challenges, in order to advance the college.
Maintain strong working relationships with external partners
The Executive Director will also serve at times as a representative for the College among a broad range of external partners including vendors, scientific organizations, academia, non-profits and other public and private partners. S/he will be expected to develop and maintain mutually beneficial relationships that provide long-term benefits for the College.
Manage all operations and finance functions of the College
The Executive Director will be responsible for the operational and fiscal health and management of the organization working in partnership with the College’s Council. S/he will identify critical needs and regularly report on those issues and the overall health and direction of the organization. The Executive Director will also oversee preparation of budgets and financial statements as well as investments.
Work with the Council to continue to expand member services
The Executive Director will develop and translate the value of maintain an active Diplomate status (membership) to existing members; increase retention rates among existing members, evaluate member benefits, and recommend new technical and operational solutions. The Executive Director will also be expected to expand the College’s use of social media.
Lead staff at the Rees Group, Inc.
The Executive Director will provide leadership and management of the staff team to successfully complete all contracted services. S/he will be responsible for the successful completion of the day-to-day operations for ACVP.
QUALIFICATIONS OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Executive Director will be a dynamic individual who will build on the College’s strengths, while identifying opportunities for membership and financial growth. The successful candidate will possess the vision and drive to lead the organization paired with the collaborative skills to leverage the considerable resources of the ACVP and its volunteers. While no one candidate will embody all the qualifications enumerated below, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes and experiences:
A minimum of ten years of experience in a leadership position in non-profit management
An undergraduate or graduate degree in organizational management or a related field
CAE is preferred
Keen understanding of current non-profit management trends
Familiarity with the structure and function of scientific membership organizations helpful
Proven track record in execution of strategic planning and moving from concept to implementation
Ability to develop, implement and manage a budget and business cycle for a non-profit
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
Ability to understand, translate and adapt content for multiple audiences
Aptitude to engage in strategic, creative, intellectual, conceptual and theoretical thinking and discourse
Familiarity with scientific content
Ability to grasp technical subject matter quickly
Exceptional personal initiative and follow through required to meet aggressive goals, including supporting and motivating volunteers and staff in attaining those goals
An executive presence that enhances the representation of the College to a variety of constituencies
Knowledge and experience in the effective use of social media and web based initiatives and an entrepreneurial spirit to guide both the clients and The Rees Group, Inc.
