American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA) has 2 opportunities available in our State Government Relations division. We are looking for an incumbent who will be based in Sacramento, California and one who will be based in the Mountain and/or Northwest regions.
These incumbents will have primary responsibilities for managing legislative and regulatory advocacy in coordination with our membership department. In addition, they will handle general membership relations and recruitment of new members.
The incumbents will represent the member companies before legislative committees and with individual legislators in each of the states they are responsible for. They will establish and maintain relationships with the news media and serve as a spokesperson for the Association to external audiences. Engage, as appropriate, in direct lobbying. Identify key political races and strategically participate as appropriate. Form or participate in coalitions designed to further APCIA's public policy position(s).
The ideal candidate will have the following:
Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Business Administration or related field.
Minimum 3 years experience in state legislative, regulatory and/or government relations' matters, including direct lobbying-insurance knowledge desired.
Familiarity with government processes, specifically in the legislative branch and in the executive branch or an agency responsible for insurance regulation.
Excellent written/oral communication skills -- ability to communicate clearly on legislative, regulatory and substantive issues to multifaceted audiences.
Strong understanding of insurance issues.
Ability to multitask.
Self-starter with strong initiative and follow-through.
Travel as required.
