Incorporated in 1981, and headquartered in Wausau, Wisconsin, the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, Inc. (ASLMS) is the world’s largest scientific organization dedicated to promoting research, education and high standards of clinical care in the field of medical laser applications. The 3,500-member nonprofit organization provides a forum for the exchange of scientific information and participation in communicating the latest developments in laser medicine and surgery to clinicians, research investigators, governments, regulatory agencies, and the public.

The first months of the new Executive Director’s tenure will include the exciting opportunity to take the lead in the final phases of executing our Annual Conference, which will be held in Phoenix, Arizona, beginning on April 29, 2020.

WHAT ARE WE ARE LOOKING FOR?
The Executive Director, under the direction of the Board of Directors, provides leadership, organizational and financial oversight, and supervises all programs, projects, and administrative activities of ASLMS. The Executive Director is responsible for ASLMS’ development and growth and advises and regularly updates the Board of Directors regarding membership needs, growth opportunities, and all other areas associated with ASLMS’ mission to ensure the goals and objectives are timely.
ASLMS is based out of Wausau, Wisconsin. The incoming ED must live within a commutable distance of our offices and be able to work full-time. Minimal annual travel includes our annual conference, regional education sessions, strategic planning meetings and meetings that may be recommended by the Board of Directors.
The successful candidate will
Be a creative and an innovative leader, with a positive attitude and a minimum of 5 years of demonstrated executive leadership experience at a national or global nonprofit association.
Possess a bachelor’s degree, preferably in business, finance or nonprofit management, and have earned the Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation.
Possess a demonstrated track record of success and proven management and financial business acumen within an organization of similar or larger scale and complexity.
Demonstrate strong fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.
Demonstrate integrity and honesty in all actions and words, to serve as a role model for all association staff members and constituents.
Possess strong written and verbal communication skills and experience engaging a wide swath of stakeholders and members.
WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS ROLE?
Liaises with the Board of Directors and serve as staff leader to identify, implement, and accomplish organizational goals and objectives according to the Strategic Plan.
Leads and establishes partnership with the Public Policy Director in coordinating public policy activity.
Provides leadership to ensure the organization supports and advocates membership involvement and input.
Effectively manages the human resources of the organization according to policies and procedures that conform to current laws and regulations. Responsible for the effective performance of the staff, which is in the best interest of achieving the goals of the Society.
Consults with legal counsel to ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations.
Ensures compliance with continuing medical education requirements to maintain accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.
Provides leadership for and manages the planning, promotion and facilitation of annual conference and educational programs.
Recommends an annual budget for Board approval and prudently manages the organization’s resources within those budget guidelines, according to current laws and regulations.
Provides leadership to ensure organizational compliance with fiscal policies and procedures, including that all funds and physical assets of the Society are appropriately administered, maintained and safeguarded.
Serves as a member of the Investment Committee and primary liaison with the investment firm.
Relationships and Partnerships
Foster and implement organizational partnerships with people, groups and organizations, which benefit the mission and membership of the Society.
Build and sustain relationships and partnerships with internal and external groups including Board of Directors, existing and burgeoning partners, committee chairs, federal and state government agencies, and other interested parties in grants management.
