The Director, Research position is a management position within ASAE Research Foundation, reporting to the Chief Research Officer. The incumbent oversees and administers the industry, market, and benchmarking research programs; supervises research managers and coordinators; and collaborates with the research publishing/knowledge dissemination and fundraising teams as a partner in helping achieve Research Foundation goals. The incumbent is responsible for working collaboratively on the conceptualization, planning, and execution of all research projects, with the support of research project managers and volunteers.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
Partner with staff team leadership and volunteer groups to develop and maintain the Research Agenda.
Identify, evaluate, supervise, and provide constructive input on internal and external research needs and opportunities. Design research methodologies and statistical analysis plans.
Collaborate with content development/dissemination teams to design research studies and produce viable, revenue-generating deliverables from research studies.
Design studies of the appropriate scope to support robust body of content and deliverables, both at no charge and revenue-generating.
Evaluate and provide input on resource needs and availability for research activities, including: maintaining the research calendar, assessing technology requirements, and recommending studies or components of studies that should be outsourced or that require consultation.
Employ strategies to scan the business environment for research needs and opportunities, and provide input on proposed research topics for strategic alignment.
Ensure adherence of all research initiatives to organizational standards and principles of responsible conduct of research.
Work collaboratively with other team members to ensure research partners have access to ASAE resources as needed. Track progress against research objectives. Advise on project modifications to align with organizational strategy and priorities.
Work collaboratively with other team members to direct work of formal and informal volunteer groups (e.g., committees, advisory groups, and task forces) that serve to advise and support research and other Foundation activities.
Provide leadership, direction, and supervision to research team members; assign projects and tasks, establish individual performance goals and evaluate progress.
Advanced knowledge of—and experience applying appropriate qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and analysis procedures.
Demonstrated experience in conceptualizing, designing and conducting actionable, practitioner-focused research methods.
Demonstrated ability to independently make decisions and recommendations on the design, conduct, and oversight of statistical analyses.
Demonstrated ability to collect, interpret, and report statistical data, particularly in identifying patterns, trends, and key findings from the research.
Advanced knowledge of - and ability to apply appropriate statistical analyses.
Ability to manage large data sets.
Demonstrated advanced skills in and knowledge of probabilistic survey sampling, statistical weighting, and design effects.
Demonstrated proficiency using technology to organize and execute projects; experience using database, spreadsheet, graphics, and word processing software (e.g., Access, Excel [including pivot tables], PowerPoint, Microsoft Word).
Knowledge and ability to implement principles of management, supervision, conflict resolution, negotiation, and motivation of staff and volunteers.
Ability to foster a collaborative, customer-oriented working environment.
Demonstrated strength in analytic, problem solving, and critical thinking skills; proficiency in collaborative and independent work.
Demonstrated abilities to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
Advanced knowledge of data visualization techniques and proficiency in producing written reports of research findings for diverse audiences (e.g., senior staff, volunteers, research community, lay reader/member of the association management community), and for various purposes (e.g., research report, grant application, or technical documents).
Demonstrated abilities in self-direction, operate under stringent timelines, (re)prioritize appropriately, and take initiative.
Minimum Education and Required Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in statistics, mathematics, behavioral or social sciences, or related research fi Master’s or Ph.D. degree preferred.
Five to seven years of work experience in research methods, including a minimum of three providing direct supervision.
Experience in an association or nonprofit environment highly desirable.
