Who we are looking for:
ASCO is in search of a Tax Manager to assure that ASCO is complying with tax-exempt tax filings and unrelated business income tax filings, as well as local business registrations and licensing fees. The selected candidate will provide expert tax accounting skills to evaluate the tax status of various product offerings, complete calculation of taxable income under various scenarios, manage the preparation of tax returns, and respond to state and federal agency queries.
This position is open to part-time candidates.
What you will do:
Understand the revenue sources for each of the seven legal entities (and any additional entities formed) and evaluate for possible unrelated business income tax liability and sales tax liabilities and advise the department delivering the product or service on taxation so that the revenue source is set up appropriately for tax reporting
Maintain knowledge of tax regulations applicable to tax exempt organizations and apply to ASCO’s tax data collection and reporting
Develop appropriate designation of direct and allocated costs that may be deducted against unrelated business taxable revenue, assist in implementing coding or other methodology to easily capture the costs, and work with Finance on the structure of chart accounts to assure ability to easily extract tax filing information
Calculate and prepare estimated tax payment filings and tax return extension requests
Manage the timely and accurate preparation of income tax returns including working with Finance, Legal, Communications, and outside tax advisors
Respond to and follow up on federal and state tax authority correspondence to assure resolution of any issues
Manage local business license tax filings and registrations
Advise on sales, tax registration, and payment of taxes
Assist with federal and state tax audits for direct and indirect taxes
Support various special projects and assist with ad hoc tax assignments as needed in all areas of tax, including assistance with research and development studies
Review, update, and create processes to ensure corporate wide tax compliance and identify best practices
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree institution in Finance, Accounting, or related field
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Tax Preparer
5 – 6 + years in the preparation of tax-exempt organization tax returns
Federal, state, and local income and multi state tax experience including compliance and tax audits
Advanced Excel skills, other automation tools knowledge
In-depth knowledge of tax law and US GAAP and accounting standards.
Proficient use of technology including enterprise/general ledger (GL) systems, and tax compliance applications (i.e., NetSuite, Thomson Reuters Onesource corporate tax software etc.)
Experience developing account structures to capture data and skills to extract needed data from accounting system
Preferred Education and Experience:
Experience working for a CPA firm with broad exposure to various types of tax-exempt organizations
Experience with Workday a plus
Outstanding communication and ability to develop good working relationships with parties involved in collecting or providing information for tax reporting.
Self-starter with ability to prioritize tasks and independently define, implement, and manage creation of new processes.
Ability to analyze and resolve extremely complex problems requiring the application of tax, accounting, technical or management principles, theories, and concepts.
Ability to interpret and communicate complex information to non-tax professionals.
Must function as a technical and subject matter expert.
Demonstrated attention to detail, thoroughness, accuracy, and organizational skills with respect for deadlines are critical.
Ability to quickly learn new technology.
Ability to make judgements regarding reasonable allocation methods or approaches to areas that do not have specific guidance.
