The Virginia Bar Association (“VBA”), founded in 1888, is a voluntary 501(c)(6) membership organization of more than 4,000 lawyers and judges. It serves as the oldest and largest such organization in Virginia. Through its activities, the VBA serves its members, their clients, and the public interest as the independent voice of the legal profession in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Based in the capital city of Richmond, the VBA has an annual budget of $1.35MM and a staff of eight, including the Executive Director/CEO.
The VBA’s mission is to serve as the independent voice of the Virginia lawyer, advancing the highest ideals of the profession through advocacy and volunteer service. The VBA accomplishes its mission by operating as the leading force for improvement of Virginia's laws and its justice system. It does so on a non-partisan basis and without seeking to protect or advance special interests.
In executing this mission, the VBA’s 22-member Board of Governors considers proposals for changes to the Code of Virginia that originate in the VBA's multiple sections and committees and agrees to support those that it believes are important, timely, and support the administration of justice. Members of the VBA provide advice to committees of the General Assembly and their members on complex areas of law in which the technical and practical expertise of experienced lawyers may be useful.
The Executive Director/CEO of the Virginia Bar Association serves as the chief executive officer of the Association under the direction of the Association’s officers and Board of Governors, including its Executive Committee (collectively the “Board”). The Executive Director/CEO is charged with executing the strategic plan adopted by the Board, overseeing the budget and fiscal management and directing the work of the staff. This person also plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs the VBA’s programs, events, and activities and serves as the Executive Director for two subsidiary organizations: the Virginia Bar Association Foundation and the Virginia Barristers Alliance, Inc. (dba Virginia Bar Association Insurance).
The Executive Director/CEO position of the VBA is an outstanding opportunity for a committed association or other executive to lead a professional association with a long history of success. A committed Board of Governors and Executive Committee provide a strong foundation for the VBA. At the same time, however, the legal professionals that support the Association face significant challenges from changing client preferences, industry consolidation, and competitive threats from non-traditional service providers. Under the new Executive Director/CEO’s leadership and guidance, the VBA must discover ways to continue to provide outstanding services and programs that are both affordable and relevant to today’s lawyers as well as advocate on behalf of the membership.
The ideal candidate has demonstrated a successful career track record in association management and is currently serving as the top executive of a comparable bar association or professional services-focused association with a proven track record of success. Alternative experience includes serving as a “#2” or other senior-level executive at a complex business association, as an executive from a law firm or private or public sector entity. A demonstrated commitment to and success in addressing and enhancing membership diversity as well as the growth of a voluntary association of professionals are highly preferred. Substantive experience with advocacy and program development for professionals is necessary.
